Admissions Process and Guidelines

Securing a secondary school place can be a daunting process for parents. St Aldhelm's Academy operates as a non-selective state school, meaning it does not select students based on their academic ability or an entrance examination. As an academy, the school is its own admissions authority; however, like all mainstream state schools in the area, its Year 7 intake is managed entirely through the standard local authority process known as the BCP coordinated admissions scheme.

The BCP Coordinated Admissions Scheme

If you live in Bournemouth, Christchurch, or Poole, you must apply for a secondary school place through BCP Council, regardless of whether the school itself is located within or outside the immediate local authority boundaries. You can name up to four preferences on your application form. Because St Aldhelm's Academy is non-selective, places are allocated based strictly on the school's published admissions policy and oversubscription criteria, rather than academic test scores.

Key Application Timeline

The timeline for secondary school applications is strictly enforced nationwide. Missing these deadlines can significantly impact your child's chances of securing a place at their preferred school.

• September to October (Year 6): Applications open. This is the time to attend open evenings, review prospectuses, and finalize your school choices.
• 31 October: The absolute deadline for submitting your secondary school application to your home local authority (e.g., BCP Council).
• 1 March (National Offer Day): You will be notified by the local authority which school your child has been allocated.
• Spring/Summer Term: If you are not offered a place at your preferred school, you have the right to appeal the decision. Appeals are heard by an independent panel.

Oversubscription and Catchment

With a stated capacity of 900 pupils, St Aldhelm's Academy must apply its oversubscription criteria if it receives more applications than it has places available in Year 7 (its Published Admission Number, or PAN). While the exact criteria vary slightly year by year, non-selective schools in the BCP area typically prioritize applications in the following order:

1. Looked after children and previously looked after children.
2. Children with a sibling currently attending the school.
3. Children living within the school's designated catchment area.
4. Children living outside the catchment area, prioritized by straight-line distance from the home address to the school gates.

For a community school located in the Alderney & Bourne Valley ward, distance can be a critical factor if the school is heavily oversubscribed. The "catchment" boundary defines a specific geographical area surrounding the school, but living within it does not guarantee a place if the number of in-catchment applicants exceeds the PAN.
